With its dynamic schedule of cultural events, vast range of international luxury retail stores and proximity to both highways and mass transit, Canada’s Yorkdale Center is more than a mall—it is the connection point between consumers and community.

think

We chose to capture the visceral moments of discovery that distinguish Provence—the same moments that inspired founder Olivier Bausson’s creation of the L’Occitane brand.  This approach culminates in A Sense of Wonderment.

create

A carefully designed space; sensorial, spontaneous moments continually pique curiosity, heighten physical experiences and invite serendipitous discovery.  Rain showers and scent clouds envelop visitors in sensation. In its place, a Sense of Wonderment is evoked—allowing visitor to think “What will I find next?”

While the first brand from Provence to go global, by 2016, the iconography surrounding the region had become cliché. This was the challenge we faced when asked to help the brand reignite in New York City.

think

Rather than create an insular experience, School House turned the brand outward. Opening windows to the street, we used the slow pace and hospitality of Provence to boldly counteract the instant gratification habits instilled by e-commerce.

create

The result is a series of multi-sensory engagements designed to resonate in increments of time. ‘The Alchemy of Provence’ informed our design, behaviors and environment choices—to elevate from ‘place’ to experience. In this progressive and consumer-controlled experience, the brand is no longer a corporate commodity—it becomes the catalyst that transports.

Provence is all about
relishing & respecting time.
Time enjoyed.
Time well spent.

L’Occitane in Melbourne

Our objective was to conceptualize and design a retail experience for L’Occitane Melbourne that shows reverence to the brand origins and builds conversation between two authentic stories: The Block Arcade and Provence.

think

We were inspired by En Plein Air; a manner or style of painting depicting the appearance of outdoor settings. As an expression of their growing nationalism, Australian painters started painting En Plein Air, out in the open, by getting out of their studios and depicting life and nature as it truly was.

create

Just as En Plein Air represents a naturally artful breaking of rules and an openness to possibility, so does the L’Occitane Melbourne space. It is an open invitation to sit where you wish, trial as you please and gather outside-in for as long as you desire.
